Wainscoting, Set to a Height That Reads as Original
Paneling only looks like it belongs in the house when the cap rail lines up with the sills, switches and door casing already in the room. The Renaissance Handyman sets that height first, then works the panel layout so no run ends on a sliver at the corner.

Setting the height and the reveal
The cap rail height is the first decision on a wainscoting job, and it's the one that decides whether the finished room looks original or added. We set it against what's already in the room, window sills, switch plates, door casing, so the new rail lines up with details that were there before we showed up.
Get that height wrong and no amount of good panel work fixes it. The eye catches a rail that fights the door casing before it registers anything else in the room.

Panel layout across an uneven wall
Few walls in an older shoreline home run perfectly straight corner to corner, so laying out equal panel widths takes some adjusting at the corners and around outlets, windows and doors. We plan that layout before the first panel goes up, so no run ends on a sliver of a panel at the corner, which is the detail that gives away rushed work.
Openings get treated the same way. The panels around a door or window are planned into the run rather than trimmed to fit after the fact.
Material for the room
Custom paneling, wood paneling, and hand carving and milling are all on the list, and which one fits depends on the room. A bathroom or mudroom near a shoreline entry sees more moisture and traffic than a dining room does, and the material choice follows that, not the other way around.
Expansion gaps and the finish handoff
Wood moves with humidity, so panels get set with the expansion gap they need rather than pinned tight edge to edge. We hand the room off paint or stain ready, and walk the finished panels with you before we call it done.
