Fence Installation, Set Right the First Time

The post is the fence
Everything a fence is asked to do, hold a gate square, stand up to wind, stay straight over years of ground movement, comes down to how the posts were set. Depth, drainage at the base and how the hole gets backfilled matter more than anything visible above grade.
That is the step that decides whether you are paying once to install a fence or paying twice, once to install it and again to fix it. We set posts to hold, not just to stand.

Line, grade and gates
A straight run on flat ground is easy. A straight-reading run on sloping ground takes a plan for how the fence steps or rakes down the grade before the first post goes in.
Gates go in last, and they get squared to the opening they actually sit in, not to whichever post happened to go in first. A gate hung off the wrong reference is the one that starts dragging within a season.
Chapter 03
Material by exposure
Chain link, wood, split rail, vinyl and ornamental iron all handle wind-driven rain, salt air and humidity swing differently, which matters on the shoreline in a way it would not further inland. Fasteners and hardware get chosen for that exposure, not just for the fence material itself.
