Bicycle Assembly, Torqued the Right Amount
A boxed bike is a torque job before it is a riding job. The Renaissance Handyman assembles bicycles, sizes and adjusts a child's bike as they grow, and handles the tune-ups and repairs that keep a bike safe between rides.

Boxed-bike assembly is a torque job, not a wrench job
The parts that matter most on a new bike out of the carton are the safety-critical ones: stem, handlebars, brakes and quick-releases. Each one has a torque range it needs to land inside, tight enough to hold under real riding load and loose enough not to strip a bolt or crack a component.
We work through those points in order and check them rather than tightening until it feels right, because feel is not a torque spec.

Fitting a child's bike to the child, not the box
A bike that comes out of the box set up for an average rider is rarely set up for the kid who is actually going to ride it. Seat height, reach to the bars and brake lever position all get adjusted to fit, and we can make sure your child's bike is the proper size for them to begin with.
As kids grow, those same adjustments need to move with them, which is a follow-up visit rather than a new bike.
Brake and gear adjustment as a set
A bike that shifts badly is usually a bike that brakes badly too, because both systems run on cable tension and both get thrown off by the same causes: a stretched cable, a bumped derailleur hanger, housing that was never seated right. We adjust brakes and gears together instead of chasing one symptom at a time.
The first-fifty-miles check
New cables stretch in the first rides on any bike, which is normal and not a sign anything was assembled wrong. We tell you when that is coming, and can re-check cable tension once that early stretch has happened so shifting and braking stay where they should be.
